Tape Products

Tapes are a diverse product line covering both construction and
industrial applications. Most commonly, paper, cloth, plastic,
foam and metal are coated with an adhesive to either one or both
sides to create a tape with unique characteristics. Whether you
need a tape to adhere structurally or be easily removed after days
of exposure to sun, Smalley & Company has a wide variety from
which you can choose.

Adhesive Transfer
Adhesive transfer tapes are rolls of pressure sensitive adhesive
pre-applied to a special release liner. They are used to bond or
seal surfaces such as paper, foils, films, fabrics, glass, foams,
plastics, metal, painted surfaces and wood. The tape is thin and
tacky on both sides. Most tapes are applied with a gun applicator.

Suppliers:
3M

Bond Breaker
Bond breaker tape is used to prevent three-sided adhesion. It is a
clear, tough plastic tape with a clear polyethylene adhesive backing.
Tapes vary in thickness and have high adhesion to steel or
other structural metals. Strapping tapes are also used as a bond
breaker tape.

Suppliers:
Pecora, Shurtape

Butyl
Butyl tape is an extruded, preformed architectural glazing tape
furnished on release paper rolls. Based on a butyl rubber formulation,
it is designed to create a flexible weather seal between
two surfaces which will be subjected to normal expansion/contraction
and wind loading forces. It is used as an exterior primary
spacing and glazing seal when glazing glass into a window
sash. It is also used to seal other architectural surfaces such as
metal to metal, wood to glass, metal to plastic, etc.

Suppliers:
Adco, Manus, Polymer Adhesives, Schnee-Morehead, Sika, Tremco

Duct
Duct tape is a cloth-backed adhesive tape. The three layers that
make duct tape are polyethylene, fabric mesh, and adhesive.
There are four basic grades, known as utility, all-purpose, professional,
and industrial. Its most commonly used in heating and
air conditioning duct work.

Suppliers:
3M, Shurtape

Electrical
Electrical tape is designed to insulate wire, pipes, dissimilar
metals, etc., and is resistant to weather, water, acids, alkalies and
oils. It has superior conformability and high elongation to give a
tight, solid wrap. A silicone spray additive gives it an 18-month
shelf life.

Suppliers:
3M, Shurtape

Foam Glazing
Foam glazing tape is a closed-cell, compressible PVC foam
with an aggressive, pressure-sensitive adhesive on both sides.
Window glazing tapes seal out water, dust and light particularly
in joints with a high degree of movement.

Suppliers:
Arlon, Norton, Schnee-Morehead

Foil
Foil tape is used to seal and join aluminum backed duct wrap,
to provide an airtight and waterproof seal on ductwork and for
temporary metal repair. Foil tapes have excellent sealant properties
and can withstand harsh environments.

Suppliers:
3M, Ideal, Shurtape

Masking
Masking tape is a type of adhesive tape made of easy-to-tear paper backed
with a relatively weak adhesive. It is used mainly in painting, to mask off
areas that should not be painted. The adhesive is the key element to its
usefulness, as it allows the tape to be removed without stripping off newly applied
paint or leaving adhesive on the surface.

Suppliers:
3M, Shurtape

Mounting
Mounting tapes are double coated products (adhesive on both sides) with a
carrier in-between designed for mounting or bonding products to dissimilar
surfaces. Products vary based on the adhesive type (rubber, acrylic & silicone),
adhesive strengths and the carrier types (polyethylene foam, vinyl,
etc.). They can reduce or eliminate the use of mechanical fasteners and
liquid adhesives. Applications can range from a lightweight repositionable
job to a heavy-duty structural project requiring a VHB™ tape. They are
designed for both indoor and outdoor use.

Suppliers:
3M, Arlon, Norton, Shurtape, Velcro

Packaging
Packaging tape is used for sealing cartons, packages and securing pallets
among its many applications. Product variations, such as mil thickness and
strength of the tape, help determine the correct tape for your application.
Carton sealing tapes and filament strapping tapes are two of the more common
types.

Suppliers:
3M, Shurtape

Sealing & Gasketing
Sealing tapes function as a gasket to form a ‘seal’ in preventing air, vapor,
moisture, water, dirt and sound infiltration. They are known for their excellent
weathering characteristics and are easier to use than sealants, which
require harsh solvents to clean up any excess.

Suppliers:
American National Rubber, Norton

Structural Glazing
Structural glazing tapes are high-strength, high density, polyurethane opencell
foams and used as glazing spacer tapes in structural glazing systems in
the field or shop. The open-cell structure allows air and moisture to reach
the silicone, permitting optimum curing. The low thermal conductivity
foam substrate reduces heat transfer and inhibits condensation on windows,
doors and metal systems.

Suppliers:
Norton
